What We Do & How We Do It

Five program pillars, one complete child

Every intervention we run in Kamuli and Buyende Districts falls under one of five specific program areas — each designed to protect, educate, skill and speak up for the girl child, while engaging the boy child along the way.

01

Sexuality & Reproductive Health Promotion

Promoting the right-choice approach to sexuality and reproductive health through organisation outreaches in institutions and communities — with keen focus on behavioural change, self-discovery and personal identity.

  • Outreaches in learning institutions and communities focused on behavioural change, self-discovery, personal identity and values for character growth among children.
  • SRH & STDs sensitization using info charts, print literature and awareness drives.
  • Free voluntary testing and counselling services for HIV/AIDS and STDs.

  • Girl Child Symposiums organised for socio-economic empowerment.
  • Community & Parenting Forums equipping parents with transferable skills for better child upbringing, protection, care and livelihood.

Girl Child Education Promotion

Promoting girl child education for equal opportunity access — keeping girls in school and supporting the adults who guide them there.

  • Assessing the level of equal opportunity access and related concerns for girl child education — so our work responds to the real barriers girls face in Kamuli and Buyende Districts.
  • Community stakeholder outreaches raising the need for girl child education — engaging the people closest to a girl's schooling to value and protect her right to learn.
  • Girl Child Kit mobilization to promote schooling — rallying support so that girls have what they need to stay in school.
  • Retreats for Senior Women & Men Teachers to champion best girl child handling practices for school retention — equipping teachers to become champions for girls within their own schools.

Why the girl child?

The girl child is a key custodian of socio-economic values passed on to the next generation, which is why she remains at the centre of everything we do.

Protection, Welfare & Nutrition Partnerships

Forming partnerships for basic quality girl child protection, welfare and nutrition — because no single organisation can do this alone.

  • Focus Group Discussions to develop community & institutional Girl Child Protection, Welfare & Nutrition Champions who monitor girl child wellbeing.
  • Girl Child Protection, Welfare & Nutrition awareness activities.
  • Mobilization of child NGOs, communication and publicity for corporate and community efforts towards basic child protection, care and supportive actions to end early / child marriages.
  • Consolidating the Girl Child Fund to facilitate basic support for survival to identified most vulnerable girl children.

Advocacy & Child Rights

Advocacy for positive cultural awareness, promotion of equal child rights, and putting an end to gender-based violence and all kinds of violence, extremism and abuse.

  • Community, Cultural and Opinion Leaders workshops to streamline and synchronize positive focus on general child rights.
  • Community Child Rights Sensitization Van drives in selected areas of focus — taking the message directly to where people live and gather.
  • Research, development and printing of literature on child basic rights for public dissemination.
  • School quiz and debate competitions on child rights to raise awareness and check abuse — letting pupils learn and speak up for their own rights.
  • Instilling in children and youth the values of peace, love, resourcefulness and environmental conservation — bringing meaning to our national heritage.

Why advocacy matters

Over time, the family's role in instilling acceptable life values, norms and practices in children has weakened — leading to worrying trends in neglect, child rights violations and negative behavioural extremism.
